Devon Valley Limited

Devon Valley Limited is a major supplier of speciality papers to the world’s food and industrial markets. Its comprehensive product range is used for sausage casings, tea bags and protective overlay papers for laminate flooring and kitchen work surfaces.

The company is justifiably proud of its heritage in the paper-making industry. Its origins go back to the 18th century when paper was handmade on the banks of the River Culm, near Exeter.

Devon Valley’s historic mill site in Hele was the place where gloss writing paper was invented. It later produced top grade security paper as used in bank notes with customers including the Hong Kong Bank, the Jockey Club and Foreign Lotteries.

The business still embraces this spirit of innovation today, using the latest inclined-wire technology. It produces a significant proportion of the world’s requirements for fibrous sausage casing paper. The paper used is biodegradable and manufactured from abaca fibres. Abaca is a member of the banana plant family. Weights vary from an ultra-thin 12 gsm to 28 gsm. The sausage casing paper is known for its clarity, absorbency, consistency, stability and strength.

Devon Valley is one of the largest suppliers of modern overlay papers, which provide excellent clarity and uniformity in a selection of weights ranging from 18gsm to 45gsm. They are made from a blend of cellulose fibres, bonded with a melamine binder system.

The 12.5 gsm non-heat seal tea bag paper is produced from abaca and cellulose fibres, resulting in a high tea dust retention. It has a neutral taste and superior infusion properties, allowing the full flavour of the tea to come through.

The Devon Valley operation has the lowest head count in paper production within the Group, with just 52 people turning out nearly 5,000 tonnes of finished product each year.
