Conder Allslade Limited

Conder is a name synonymous with the design and manufacture of steelwork for building structures. It was the innovator of the steel portal frame in the 1950s, a major game-changer in the construction industry.

As one of the leading steelwork companies in the UK, Conder Allslade Limited remains at the forefront of technology today.

Over the past few decades the company has helped shape the urban landscape of England, delivering rapid and cost-effective solutions for more than 1,000 infrastructure projects.

High-profile contracts include:

  • Supply and erection of 500 tonnes of structural steelwork for Portsmouth’s international ferry and cruise terminal which handles two million passengers a year.
  • Supply and erection of 780 tonnes of intumescent coated structural steel and 15200m2 of precast concrete flooring for the car park at New Street station in the centre of Birmingham.
  • Design, supply and erection of three concessionaire buildings at Farnborough airport comprising of, 476 tonnes of fabricated steelwork, roof and wall cladding, glazing and floors.
  • Manufacture and installation of the steel structure of a seven-storey roof extension to the luxury Park Plaza Hotel in London. This project demonstrated Conder’s ability to work in a restricted environment as a nearby railway line severely hampered crane movements. Despite the confined space, 720 tonnes of steel was hoisted into position on top of the existing 12-floor building.
  • Supply and erection of 1200 tonnes of steelwork for a Sainsbury’s superstore, built on stilts with the car park located under the store.

In addition to these contracts, the company has provided the steelwork for schools, hospitals, multi-storey car parks, shopping centres, cinemas, warehouses, industrial premises, offices, leisure centres, swimming pools, gyms, stadiums and velodromes.

Innovation is the cornerstone of the business’ success – utilising sophisticated computer-controlled systems to make steel frames for both single and multi-storey buildings.

Using hi-tech equipment, such as robotics, Conder Allslade has an in-house production capacity of around 7,500 tonnes a year and is enjoying a period of considerable expansion. Significant investment has been made in machinery, and there are plans to increase the workforce at its 150,000 sq. ft. Portsmouth facility.
